India is an incredible and diverse nation. With over 1.3 Billion people and growing by about 34 births every minute. Full of colour, life, and warm, loving people, India is an up and coming nation in regards to economic growth and manufacturing. However, in a nation of this size and growth rate, there a still those who get left behind.
Due to the high cost of education and the need to work to support their families 50% of Indian children between the ages of 6-18 do not go to school. In fact, more than 50% of girls fail to enroll in school; and those that do, are likely to drop out by the age of 12.
A little over 1/3 of all children who enroll in Grade 1, will ever reach Grade 8. This is one reason that Victory Churches International helped to establish schools in the slums of India that offer free education.
The Slum Schools began with a trip that Dr. Hazel took to India many years ago. During this trip she witnessed the tragic results of bride burning when brides could not pay their dowry. From this experience she was inspired of the Lord to start Sewing schools to teach women a marketable skill to help pay their dowries. When the sewing schools began the women would bring their children with them. As they could not afford schooling for the children it was decided to start slum schools in junction with the sewing schools to provide slum children with basic education.
We currently have 28 slum schools in operation that provide over 3,000 children with education and it is our dream to see more slum schools established in ever province and district of India. Along with education, children are also provided food, basic medical care, and most importantly are taught about Christ. As a result, children and whole families are coming to Christ and seeing their lives transformed. The transformation that comes out of these schools is not only changing people for a lifetime, but also changing their eternal destination.
